LibreWolf Portable for Windows
Run a privacy-first browser from a USB drive. Learn when to choose a portable setup, where the profile lives, and how to keep it updated.
What is LibreWolf Portable?
A portable build runs without a traditional installer and can live entirely on removable storage. It leaves a minimal footprint on the host system and is ideal for shared or locked‑down PCs.
Portable vs Installed
- Lives on USB or a separate folder
- Keeps data together for easy backup/move
- Minimal host changes
- Manual updates
- Potentially slower on cheap USB sticks
- No system-level integration by default
If you want the easiest setup and system integration, use the standard installer below.
Run LibreWolf from a USB drive
- Place your LibreWolf folder on a fast USB 3.0 flash drive or external SSD.
- Launch the browser directly from the folder on the USB drive.
- Keep the USB plugged in while using the browser to avoid data loss.
Performance depends on USB speed. For best results, prefer USB 3.0 or better.
Where is my profile?
Portable setups are typically configured to keep the user profile alongside the executable folder. On first run, verify via the in‑browser profile manager that your profile directory resides within your portable folder. This keeps bookmarks, extensions, and settings truly portable.
- Back up the profile folder regularly (especially before manual updates).
- Avoid running the same profile simultaneously in multiple Windows sessions.
Update a portable copy
- Close the browser and back up your portable folder.
- Replace the application files with the new release while keeping your profile folder intact.
- Reopen the browser and confirm the version in About LibreWolf.
